about

Somewhere where you can find your freedom
Somewhere you can define your space

What else do you really need? If you want hope, if you want to look for a way that's better - this is where you start. This one was led by the music, both at the start - the repeated string pick series was the first part to appear - and at the end, when the bassline just came out of my hands without me really being aware of it until it was happening. (I started climbing the neck of the bass not knowing where it was going, and, well, you hear the result.) The bassline then forced me to up my vocal game.

For a long time. I had been worrying that I'd have to abandon this song as unsingable. Now I know I'm wrong.

There's a section of lyrics in Japanese in the third verse, because there are some things I find easier to say in Japanese than in English. There are a couple of concepts in particular that Japanese has single words for that in English require several words and even if said well have... the wrong resonance to them. They sound forced. So I wrote that part in Japanese, because I could, and because I'm lazy. XD But it's about being drawn to try to find the people like yourself. In this way, it's the opposite side of the feelings expressed in Outbirds - knowing you're the odd one out, but being certain beyond knowledge that there are others like you out there, somewhere.

lyrics

Somewhere where you can find your freedom
Somewhere you can define your space
Somewhere where you can keep on going
Somewhere where you can make your case
Somewhere where all the chains are broken,
jumbled, freed from their interlace
Somewhere where you can start beginning,
nightmares fading without a trace in the
Stars

Have you heard of the thing I'm seeking? Or do you mock this pretentious bliss?
Do you recognise thoughts I'm sending? Have you sighted a place like this?
Glimmering silvery light I'm chasing, skating vertical icy cliff;
Have you seen any sign that's pointing some strange angle that shows the direction of
Stars?

Can you trust in the song you're hearing? Does it hint of a better way?
[[untranslated - see liner notes]]
...leading somewhere I think the direction of
Stars

Is it cheating to seek another
place and time less unlike your own?
Doesn't honour require standing
fighting even when all alone
Flying gives you another option
but is it one that you fear to take?
Freedom's calling if you'll just answer
look up dammit and see what you're missing!
